PURPOSE

Matres Festival 2024, as is the custom of the biennial , offers the group exhibition of women ceramic artists, "Earth and Fire: Primitivism in the Light of Ceramic Art."

The ceramics exhibition, dedicated to the Festival's theme of primitivism, will once again highlight the excellence of the territories pertaining to women ceramic artists from around the world, increasingly strengthening the "Women's Ceramics Project" driving force of APS PANDORA.

EXHIBITION COMPETITION CONCEPT

 The theme of the exhibition brings back the need for a return to the origins, where the search for the true dimension of human beings and society takes off from the recall of the primordial and archaic experience as a motive for cultural and aesthetic inspiration.

A return to the past where it is the " Matres " itself that guides the spirit of uniting the many cultural and ideological contaminations increasingly present in our contemporary times, in the sign of inclusion and positive integration. Primitivism is understood as an eco-sustainable vision, emphasizing the importance of a return to a simpler lifestyle in harmony with nature that can reduce environmental impact. However, it is essential to balance this perspective with modern challenges and ensure an inclusive approach that takes into account the diverse needs and possibilities of contemporary society.

Thus, today, some artists and designers feel even more strongly the need to investigate an essential paradigm that speaks to humanity in a shared and universal language. Where the artist not only confronts his own creativity, but also interfaces with historical, industrial and environmental processes. These interactions give rise, for example, to a new concept of artistic production using primordial processes, but also to a new concept of industrial production and design, with the birth of the art of reuse, in which waste materials and those from nature itself provide raw material and inspiration. 

A pure primitivism, which seeks in nature, far from industry, its source of raw material and inspiration. Whether it is a critical will towards society, or simply an adherence to a language as primitive and universal as possible, natural primitivism is present and alive worldwide. The theme of primitivism also seeks to recover and celebrate the authenticity, strength, and wisdom of women in these societies, challenging traditional conceptions of contemporary culture and questioning established gender roles. 

SELECTION OF WORKS

It is possible to participate in the exhibition competition: "Earth and Fire: Primitivism in the Light of Ceramic Art" with only one work or installation that does not exceed 50 cm in depth.

Participation in the competition is open to individual or associated women artists.

Works should be made mainly of ceramics; any ceramic technique is allowed.

The works should have technical consistency within the concept and should have poetic and aesthetic originality.

It is necessary that the works have not been exhibited and awarded at other competitions.

The work must be owned by the participating artist or collective.

AWARDS

Entries will be judged during the course of the event and prizes awarded at the closing ceremony on 08/25/2024.

Jury selection prize € 2,000.

Second prize € 1,000.

Third prize €500.

First Report Prize (the prize will be in ceramic material equivalent to the sum of €300).

There will also be other reports with no award. 

JURY

The jury of the competition will be composed of experts and personalities in the field of ceramic art and technique with proven professional experience, who will make a selection based on criteria that will be established collegially and will focus on the aesthetic qualities and originality of the execution of the object. The jury will determine the winners, who will be announced on Sunday morning. The jury's judgment will be final.

The jury will meet on August 24 to vote and proclaim the winners of the selected works participating in the competition exhibition.

THE JURY will take into account:

• consistency: technical and concept of the proposal
• Originality: poetics and aesthetics of the work
• works made mainly of ceramics
• works not awarded at other competitions 
• Works owned by the participating artist or collective.

METHOD AND TERMS OF REGISTRATION

Applications must be submitted exclusively by filling out the dedicated FORM on the APS PANDORA website  www.pandoraceramiste.it  on the page Exhibition Matres - "Earth and Fire: Primitivism in the Light of Ceramic Art" by attaching the required documentation.

- Applications must be edited from the site by midnight (Italian time) on the  June 30, 2024 .

 The results of the selection will be published by the 8/07/2024 on the Pandora Association website, and communicated via e-mail to all participants.

The works must be sent to the address indicated-Complesso Monumentale di San Giovanni- Corso Umberto I n. 167, 84013- Cava De' Tirreni , by August 17, 2024 and transportation costs as well as insurance costs are placed at the expense of the participating artist, who will have to arrange directly for the forwarding agent of his choice. Return is also to be understood to be placed at the artist's expense and paid in advance to the courier who will arrange for the packing and collection of the work at the exhibition venue.

The works must be packaged in a workmanlike manner. The organizers will take every care in handling the artifacts, but under no circumstances can they be held responsible for any unintentional damage. Furthermore, no responsibility will be accepted for any theft, damage or loss from any cause whatsoever generated.

          Regarding works from countries OUTSIDE the European Union, the artist must bear all expenses arising from customs duties of the goods (according to national legislation on customs duties, concerning temporary import of goods and corresponding re-export of works).

THE CALL IS EXCLUSIVELY FOR WOMEN CERAMISTS AND WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE IN CERAMIC ART FOR NO LESS THAN 7 YEARS (EXCEPT FOR FEMALE STUDENTS OF ART INSTITUTES AND ACADEMIES OF FINE ARTS)

PARTICIPATION and APPLICATION.

 Participation in the exhibition implies membership in Pandora Association except for female students.

 The exhibition is free for female students of Art Institutes and Academies of Fine Arts.

 For members, the participation fee is €50 (reason for payment: participation fee),

while for new members the registration fee of € 100.00 (reason for payment: registration fee 2024) is also valid as a contribution for participation in the selection for the exhibition.

 The exhibition is open to all female ceramic artists of all nationalities and students of Higher Education Institutes and Academies of Fine Arts.

 Each participant may submit No. 1 (one) work of free interpretation.

 The work may have the measurements in accordance with the call for entries.

 Works may be executed with any ceramic technique; works may also contain other materials (max of 1\3 of the work).

 Participants are required to declare that the works submitted are their own property. If they have been submitted to other exhibitions or competitions the participants must declare this, under penalty of exclusion from the exhibition.

 An online catalog of the exhibition participants will be set up to accompany the exhibition.

RESPONSIBILITY

Participation in the competition implies unconditional acceptance of the announcement. A special jury of experts selects the works, and its judgment is final.
