Images of the works participating in the PRIZE Competition MATRES FESTIVAL 2024 - PRIMITIVISM
PRIMITIVISM is the theme proposed for the exhibition competition and brings back to the need for a return to the origins, where the search for the true dimension of the human being and society takes off from the recall of the primordial and archaic experience, as a reason for cultural and aesthetic inspiration. A return to the past where it is the "Matres" itself that guides the spirit of uniting the many cultural and ideological contaminations increasingly present in our contemporary times, in the sign of inclusion and positive integration.
For the seventh edition of the Festival, the Matres 2024 Award Collective Exhibition - EARTH AND FIRE: PRIMITIVISM IN THE LIGHT OF CERAMIC ART - was set up.
The Selection Committee chaired by Elena Agosti, also composed of Nurye Donatoni, Maria Grazia Gargiulo, Surisday Reyes Martinez and Stefania Spanedda, awarded the following prizes:
1st PRIZE to Angela Maria Johanna Wagner - Germany, with the work Rhinozerus - Fragment, for the expressive power conveyed by the animal symbolizing the primordial, also communicated through the reference to cave graffiti, the color choices and the self-made raw material with silicates. The wood-firing technique with organic material is appreciable.
Her work deals with the issue of vulnerability and denounces the danger of extinction of some animal species, contrary to our duty to ensure biodiversity on Earth for future generations.
2nd PRIZE to Ljubica Lovrencic - Croatia, with the work Food & Ceramics / Ancient harmony, for the interpretation of the theme and the execution of the pit-baked pieces.
The art of food preparation and the art of making ceramic vessels have helped nourish the soul and body in a harmonious interaction that is lost in time. The inclusion of iron elements promotes functionality and gives the work an aesthetic attributable to the archaic as well as modern design.
3rd PRIZE to Teresa Sánchez Bravo - Cuba, with the work Némesis for the originality with which the artist was able to deal with the subject matter on a conceptual and technical level. The work of red clay, engobes and glazes mixes in its morphology the elements of many of the traditional functions of the ceramic material. It encapsulates utilitarianism in the evocation of pottery with the salient motifs of ceramic vessels and fragments "found" in archaeological excavations as an inseparable part of the formless mass. It is a form that touches the boundaries between the sculptural and the functional vessel given its organic structure.
First Report Award to Scarlett Schiavini - Italy -with the opera Matres, a sculptural triad with rounded volumes that recall the primitive canons of the fecund feminine. Interesting is the sinuous alternation of concave and convex, of fissures and ribs, suggesting the forms of the feminine.
Also reported are the works of:
Karina Garrett - Argentina - with the opera Quilla for the great cultural and ethnographic value of his work;
Mary Valerius - Italy-with the opera The echo of the earth for the playful and interactive aspect of his work with deep meaning;
Francesca Prinzi - Italy-with the opera All one before creation for his reinterpretation of the theme of death and study of primitive graffiti.
